The newly-elected Speaker of the House of Representatives passed his first major piece of legislation: a measure that would cut the Home Energy Rebate programs.
Home Energy Rebates are the IRA programs that provide the largest benefit for low- and middle-income households. They pay up to $14,000 upfront for energy efficiency upgrades for qualifying households and are expected to save at least 38% on households’ monthly utility bills, according to NREL.
Mr. Johnson eliminated these programs out of disdain for climate change spending. However, many Louisiana business owners and households want these rebates because they make good financial sense, not out of concern for the climate.
Brenda Wetzel, President of Free Lighting Corporation said,
“Speaking for weatherization contractors throughout Louisiana, without this type of energy efficiency programs I cannot keep my weatherization crews busy. My employees need work and as a good employer who cares about my employees, many of whom have been with me for years, I am forced to look for work in other states such as Arkansas and Illinois where these programs are growing.”
There is still time to act, however. Call your District’s Representative and tell them to protect the Home Energy Rebate programs! Some key representatives listed below.
